Quality at the Banc de Sang i Teixits
The Banc de Sang i Teixits considers quality to be a strategic aspect for the organisation. Look at the BST Quality Policy.
Hence, in 1999, for the first time, we certified the quality management system according to the requirements of ISO 9002:1994. In 2003, the organisation adapted its management system to ISO 9001:2000 and, in 2009, to the latest version of the standard, ISO 9001:2008.
Since its first certification and over the years, quality has permeated all of the organisation's processes and sites. This can be seen in the new certifications and accreditations obtained in accordance with the standards of diverse organisations, institutions and scientific societies in the fields of activity of the BST.
Certificates and accreditations ISO 9001 certification
This certifies the Quality System in accordance with ISO 9001 criteria. The BST has held this certification, awarded by Applus (formerly Laboratori General d'Assaigs i Investigacions, LGAI), since March 1999. It is renewed every three years and reviewed annually.
The last certification dates from July 2009 and is valid until July 2011. Its scope covers all BST blood donation, as well as transfusion, tissues, the LIRAD laboratory and the molecular diagnostics laboratory.

The CAT, in accordance with the 3rd edition (2006) of the CAT Blood Transfusion Accreditation Standards, certifies the Quality Management System, the donation and collection of blood, apheresis, autotransfusion, testing, the production of blood components, storage, distribution and transfusion practice at the following sites: Bellvitge, Sant Pau and Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, Germans Trias in Badalona, Mútua de Terrassa in Terrassa, Dr. Josep Trueta in Girona, Arnau de Vilanova in Lleida and Joan XXIII in Tarragona.
In 2005, the BST launched the CAT audit programme, which has led to accreditation under these standards of the Quality System and the manual of procedures of the different BST units.
Each of the audited units has CAT accreditation, which is renewed every three years and reviewed annually. The last accreditation dates from June 2010 and is valid until June 2013.

NETCORD-FACT International Standards for Cord Blood Collection, Processing, Testing, Banking, Selection and Release
The Umbilical Cord Bank (BSCU) forms part of the Netcord network, an association of umbilical cord blood banks around the world. NetCord currently comprises the 15 leading umbilical cord blood banks in the world.
The purpose of Netcord is to exploit the synergies between the banks and create a register of cord blood units available to hospitals that request them for transplants.
The quality of the units stored has always been a top priority for Netcord, so it has set a series of quality standards to be followed by all its members.
Our BSCU has held accreditation since April 2005, which will remain valid until November 2012.
Standards for Histocompatibility Testing. European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI)
The LIRAD has held accreditation from the EFI (European Federation of Immunogenetics) for histocompatibility typing since July 2002. This certification is renewed each year.
