Quan s'indica una transfusió de sang
Blood components transfusion compatibility
Erythrocyte concentrates transfusions
For erythrocyte concentrates transfusions, ABO and Rh(D) compatibility are as follows:

A patient
From group
can receive blood from a donor from group
1rd choice 2rd choice 3rd choice 4rd choice
AB AB A B O
A A O
B B O
O O

Per tant, tal com es pot observar a la taula anterior, una persona del grup AB és un receptor universal perquè pot rebre sang de qualsevol altra persona, mentre que una persona del grup O és un donant universal perquè pot donar sang a qualsevol altra persona.
Plasma Transfusions
For plasma transfusions, the ABO and Rh(D) compatibility that has to be considered is very different and only affects the ABO group:

A patient
From group
can receive plasma from a donor from group
1nd choice 2nd choice 3nd choice 4nd choice
AB AB
A A AB
B B AB
O O A B AB

In plasma transfusions, group O is the “universal receiver” as it can receive plasma from any of the other groups, while group AB is the “universal donor” as it can be given to a patient of any blood group.

Rh(D) compatibility is not taken into account in plasma transfusions.
Platelet Transfusions
For platelet transfusions, ABO and Rh(D) compatibility are as follows:

A patient
From group
can receive platelets from a donor from group
1rd choice 2rd choice 3rd choice 4rd choice
AB AB A B O
A A AB O B
B B AB O A
O O A B AB

Rh compatibility in platelet transfusions is as for erythrocyte concentrates. However, in Rh-negative patients who receive platelets from Rh-positive donors, anti-Rh(D) immunoglobulin can be administered after the transfusion to avoid immunity problems, especially in young women who may be pregnant.
