Blood products for illnesses or surgical intervention
The amount of blood components (erythrocytes, platelets and plasma) to be administered depends on each illness and type of surgical intervention and on whether the patient is a child or an adult.

A list of some of the situations under which a transfusion is normally necessary and the average amount of blood components required is set out below.
