Human Milk Bank

The purpose of this bank is to ensure that very premature babies who cannot be breastfed by their mothers have an available supply of nourishing human milk.

The Human Milk Bank, in operation since June 2011, collects the excess milk supplied by donor mothers, processes it to ensure product safety and quality, and distributes it to neonatal care units at different hospitals.

At the headquarters of the Banc de Sang i Teixits (Blood and Tissue Bank), the Human Milk Bank receives, analyses, processes, stores and supplies milk to guarantee its quality and availability in case of need.

Donors

In order to become a milk donor, you only need to be nursing and have a milk supply in excess of your own child's needs. You must also be in good health and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Recipients

Bank breast milk aids the growth and development of underweight infants (between 800 and 1,500 grams at birth) who are at risk of contracting digestive or intestinal pathologies, immunodeficiency or serious health complications.
