Clinical information
Clinical utility
Obtaining lymphocytes by apheresis allows different therapeutic approaches to be carried out, such as adoptive cell therapy through infusions of donor lymphocytes or NK cells.
In recent years, cellular therapy medicinal products have been developed using lymphocytes obtained by apheresis, such as:
- Specific T lymphocytes against viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and adenovirus. This treatment can be applied in post-hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (HPCT) patients with uncontrolled viral infections.
- Chimeric antigen receptor T cells: the lymphocyte is genetically modified to express a chimeric antigen receptor T-cell. Examples include anti-CD19 CAR-T.
- T-cell receptor (TCR) lymphocytes: use in some oncological diseases.
- Antigen-presenting dendritic cells: use in some oncological diseases.
- NK cells.
Method
Using a cell separator that centrifuges the blood, the cellular components are separated according to their density and the device collects the mononuclear cells where the lymphocytes are found.
Reference values
The minimum number of lymphocytes to be collected may vary depending on the treatment. For manufacture of medicinal products, the recommended number is > 1E9 total.
