The Banc de Sang i Teixits (Blood and Tissue Bank, BST) has established a world-renowned cord blood bank. Our Cord Blood Bank receives, processes, stores and distributes the stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood, which are used in transplants to cure patients with diseases such as leukaemia, lymphoma and other bone marrow pathologies.
The BST makes sure that the cord blood obtained is properly typed and preserved so that it can be transfused in the best possible conditions. We also head up the Concordia programme, which collects and processes cord blood donations from maternities wards in Catalonia and other regions of Spain as well as the Principality of Andorra.
The BST Cord Blood Bank is the second largest in Europe and the third most important in the world in number of transplants. More than 160 transplants were performed in 2013.
