Clinical information

Clinical utility

Hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) mobilisation and collection from peripheral blood is currently the most widely used source of cells for hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation (HPCT) in adult patients.

Method

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is the most frequently used agent for HPC mobilisation. Mobilisation combining chemotherapy and G-CSF is significantly more effective in autologous mobilisation.

Using a cell separator that centrifuges the blood, the cellular components are separated according to their density and the device collects the mononuclear cells in which the HPCs are found.

Reference values

The minimum number of HPC to be collected to perform an autologous HPCT is 2E6 CD34/kg and 4E6 CD34/kg in the case of an allogeneic HPCT.

Specimen information

Product: mobilised HPCs *anticoagulants* with 10% ACDA.

Tube: EDTA tube of peripheral blood (control sample).

Volume: maximum volume of 1 litre.

Shelf life: 72 hours.

Transport instructions: between 2 and 22 °C.

Storage instructions: between 2 and 8 °C.

Administrative information

BST code: BT201 and BT202.

Description of the test: HPC collection by apheresis with controls.

Synonyms: HPC-A.

Section: Regional Blood and Tissue Bank (BST) Apheresis Unit.

Service: fee BT201 includes donor screening and the analytical tests necessary for their evaluation, extraction of the cells with an apheresis machine and transport to the cell processing laboratory. Fee BT202 is applied if the collection centre performs analytical controls on the collected product (cell or progenitor cell count).
