Medications

Please check the reason or diagnosis for which you are taking the medication in the relevant section, as this may be a reason for exclusion from donating blood.

Some medications are subject to a temporary or permanent restriction.

We regret to inform you that if you take the following medicines, you cannot be a blood donor:

  • Rotigotine, bromocriptine, ropinirole and pramipexole
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Antiepileptics for the treatment of epilepsy
  • Beta-blockers with a heart rate below 60 beats per minute
  • Cytostatics
  • Coronary dilators
  • Digitalis
  • Etretinate (topical use does not affect exclusion)
  • Insulin
  • Monoclonal antibodies

The following medicines have a temporary restriction. The condition for which they are taken may be a cause for longer or permanent exclusion. Please check your diagnosis in the relevant section.

  • Acitretin: 3 years
  • Acitretin: 1 day for topical treatment
  • Auranofin: 2 years
  • Carbimazole: 7 days
  • Ciclosporin: 1 year
  • Danazol: 7 days
  • Disulfiram: 7 days
  • Etosuximide: 2 months
  • Finasteride: 1 month
  • Growth hormone: a permanent exclusion if manufactured between 1958 and 1986
  • Heparin: 7 days
  • Hydroxycarbamide: 1 year
  • Isotretinoin: 1 month (topical use does not exclude)
  • Methotrexate: permanent exclusion if taken for a haematological neoplastic disease. For all other prescriptions: exclusion until 7 days after the end of treatment. In the case of maintenance treatment for arthritis or alopecia, it may be accepted if there is no cardiovascular involvement.
  • Misoprostol: 1 day
  • Penicillamine: 4 months
  • Phenobarbital: 6 months
  • Phenprocoumon: 6 months
  • Phenytoin: 2 months
  • Primidone: 6 months
  • Psoralen (photochemotherapy, PUVA): 1 year
  • Raloxifene: 7 days
  • Sonidegib: 2 years
  • Tamoxifen: 18 months (540 days) from the end of treatment if not for cancer (given to women with a family history of breast cancer for disease prevention). Permanent exclusion if for cancer treatment.
  • Thalidomide: 3 days
  • Topiramate: 7 days
  • Valproic acid: 1 month
  • Vismodegib: 2 years
  • Warfarin: 2 months

If you are a platelet donor, please consult the following list. Some medicines affect the action of platelets and constitute a temporary exclusion. 5-day exclusion:

  • Clopidogrel

48-hour exclusion:

  • Aceclofenac

  • Diflunisal
  • Flurbiprofen
  • Ibuprofen
  • Indomethacin
  • Ketoprofen
  • Mefenamic Acid
  • Meloxicam
  • Nabumetone
  • Naproxen
  • Phenylbutazone
  • Piroxicam
  • Sulindac
  • Tenoxicam
