Over 50 research projects at the BST in 2013

During the year 2013, the Banc de Sang i Teixits (Blood and Tissue Bank / BST) pursued more than 50 research projects, half of them in collaboration with other institutions.

A total of 45 BST professionals were involved in research projects, working with a budget of over 3.5 million euros.

Although government funding for research has diminished in recent years, the contracts signed with companies related to the health care industry in 2013 allowed the BST to partially compensate for the decline in competitive resources.

Scientific output

BST researchers have published 33 articles in scientific journals, with an impact factor of 134.06.

One of the most important articles, which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, instigated a radical change in transfusion practices involving patients with gastrointestinal bleeding round the world.

The BST has been awarded seven patents in Spain, two in Mexico and one in Colombia, and several others are pending in various countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
